ReplyDeleteI thought I knew all of De Sica's best work but this gem is a masterpiece comparable to Bicycle Thieves. The sparse dialogue which reveals so much about the speakers tells the meaning of this story about selfish indifference, while we see what the child sees and what his child's mind cannot comprehend. This is a classic of great film making - the images say one thing, the dialogue another. Together they deal a story of great depth and pathos.
