Thanks for posting! This is one of the unsung masterpieces ever to come out of Hollywood. "A picture about two old people out of sorts with their children", you ask, "why would I want to watch that?". You should watch it for Leo McCarey's craft as a director, for the honest script, for the subtle humor and above all, for the acting. There isn't a star in the cast, they're all "character actors", normally supporting players to stars. But in this picture you get to see why star vehicles actually work: the supporting players are masters of their craft.
ReplyDeletePay attention to Beulah Bondi's final scene; each gesture she chooses is perfect. Then rewatch the entire picture and pay attention to each performer. No one overplays or underplays their part, no one. That is remarkable for any picture. When McCarey received his Oscar for "Going My Way" he thanked the Academy members but reminded them that they'd given him the award for the wrong picture. He meant that he'd deserved it for this gem, "Make Way For Tomorrow".
